Shopping Tips For Mother of the Bride (or Groom)

Congratulations, your daughter OR your son is getting married! We know that you’ve already done so much for them, but you’ll have to do one more thing: buy an amazing dress.

Not always an easy task.

Yes, this is the couple’s special day, but they’re not the only ones who get to look good. This list will help you find a gown that makes you feel absolutely beautiful!

Here are some things to know before you shop:

Color Scheme

You don’t want your dress to be the dark green splotch in a sea of blue. Shop to the overall aesthetics of the wedding. Of course there is still room for choice. As any interior designer will smugly tell you, there are countless shades of every color. If the color scheme leans towards pink, you can still decide between hot, orchid, fandango, or a thousand other varieties.

You’ve probably regulated the length of your daughters dresses throughout all of high school.  On her wedding day, she’ll return the favor. Some weddings will allow for knee length dresses, while more formal affairs require gowns that touch the floor. The venue is a great indicator of how formal the event will be. If the ceremony is held in a place of worship, a more traditional dress is likely more appropriate. However, if the venue is a backyard barbecue, the dress can be a bit more casual. When in doubt, ask your kid. You’ve answered hundreds of their questions in the past!

Formality

Ensemble

If you know that you’ll be wearing special undergarments on the wedding day, wear them while shopping for dresses. While this may not seem necessary, certain undergarments can completely alter the look and fit of a dress. The same can be said for shoes. If you’re wearing heels, bring those heels! When shopping, you want to see exactly how your ensemble compliments each dress. Speaking of ensemble, many Mother of the Bride dresses come with sleeves or shawls. Always ask your stylist if anything can be added to the dress.

The mother of the bride and the mother of the groom should talk about their dresses! Traditionally, the mother of the bride chooses her gown first, which then informs what the mother of the groom will wear. However, even if you’re not following tradition, open communication is always smart. You can discuss plans with each other and even go shopping.

Communication

Your child’s wedding is a very special day. You want to feel as confident and comfortable as possible, so you can focus on what matters most: Your Child!
