Wedding Dress Necklines Explained: Which is right for you?

So many necklines! All gorgeous, and all give a unique feel to the overall look of your wedding gown. But, how do you choose the right neckline for you? Consider this a crash course with some helpful tips and photos along the way! Below are some popular styles.

Off-the-Shoulder

This type of neckline sits or drapes down or below the shoulders. It beautifully accentuates your neck and collarbone. Off-the-shoulder comes in different styles, like long sleeves, shorter sleeves, and an array of fabrics. It is ideal for the romantic bride for its effortless elegant vibe.

High Neckline

High necklines are just as they sound! The top of the fabric will hit at least at your collarbone and may go even higher. This neckline emphasizes your neck and draws attention to your gorgeous face. The look can be modest to downright sexy, as some high necklines are made with illusion fabric and some fully cover.

Bateau Neckline

This neckline, also known as the Sabrina neckline, has a single unbroken curve or swoop that runs from one shoulder to the other. You can find it with or without sleeves. The Bateau neckline is perfect for the bride who wants a classic, regal look that is also amazingly stylish.

Sweetheart Neckline

This type of neckline looks like the top half of a heart. It is a classic! Most brides are familiar with this cut and it is flattering for all. The sweetheart neckline is usually bare at the top, but also shows up in gowns with sleeves or straps.

Square Neckline

A square neckline is obviously… square! It is constructed with some angled corners to give a sharper look. It isn’t too low cut and has a lovely statement look. Modern and sophisticate brides will be extra drawn to this look for its fashion forward feel.

Scoop Neckline

This neckline is a classic u-shape. It is a timeless look and can vary in overall style. It looks extra dramatic if the scoop line is echoed on the back of the dress. Vintage brides especially love this look, but modern brides are fans as well.

Straight Across Neckline

This chic neckline is cut perfectly straight across. There is no dip at all. It is perfect on any silhouette and can be found in all styles. Modern traditional brides will find this style especially appealing for its simplicity.

V-Neckline

A V-neckline has a deep v-shaped drop in the bust line. A classic v-neck is lower cut, but not low enough that most brides won’t feel comfortable wearing it. No matter your bridal style, this neckline will have a style to flatter you perfectly. If you want to go even lower, see the plunging neckline!

Plunging Neckline

This neckline is pretty self-explanatory–it plunges, and it can go super low, extending down the center of your chest past your ribs (and sometimes even all the way down to your navel, as seen below!). This style is for the daring bride who is not afraid to show some skin! Boho and modern brides love this cut.

Illusion Neckline

Illusion necklines are made to give the appearance of bare skin. It is barely seen against your body and made with a sheer fabric like lace or tulle. The illusion look is often a higher neckline as well. Embellishments can be added too! This makes this cut suitable for any bride.
