The food you serve at your wedding reception reflects who you are as a couple and as individuals. You get a chance to show your own unique tastes in a super fun way. If you choose a venue that does not provide the food, you will need to find a great caterer. When you start your search, you must consider your budget, the menu style, the amount of food that will be needed, the prep station, the serving station and more. Most weddings will have food for the cocktail hour and either a sit down or buffet-style dinner. The choice is yours!
How do I get started?
With so many caterers out there, finding one that makes your mouth water can be tricky. But don’t worry… below are some tips to help you narrow down the field:
- Determine your budget. Before you can begin your search, you’ll need to set a financial limit. Do some preliminary research to see what the typical cost of a caterer is in your area and set your budget from there.
- Think of other functions you have attended. Did one have fabulous food? If so, find out who catered the event and contact them.
- Do your research. Online searches are a great way to see what caterers offer, as well to read reviews from others. Make sure they provide photos of the food. You want it to look as good as it tastes!
- Consider your menu. The cuisine you choose (there are many choices, from upscale to very casual) can also narrow down the choices quite a bit, as some caterers specialize in certain foods. If it is their niche, chances are, they know how to do it right.
- Remember dietary restrictions. Always make sure the caterer offers vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options. Every single guest must have something tasty to remember your wedding by!
What should I ask?
Once you have a handful of caterers in mind, it’s interview time. Below are some common questions to ask:
- Do they have sample menus?
- Can they prepare a tasting for you?
- Do they cater to specific dietary needs?
- Do they provide the alcohol?
- Does the staff expect tips?
- Do they provide the eating utensils, such as china, silverware, cups, glasses, etc.?
- Do they provide the linens, such as tablecloths and napkins?
Keep in mind that some caterers will do the wedding cake as well, if you wish. Or, they may suggest a dessert table to go along with the cake. This may be a money-saving option for you if you are on a strict budget, plus, you will still get to have some creative control.
IMPORTANT: Always request a contract. Never hire caterers without a written agreement which includes every aspect of the timeline, menu, and cost. If you have any reservations about what you see, ask questions!
