Wedding Dress Designer: Elie Saab

Elie Saab

Elie Saab is a Lebanese born designer who became interested in designing clothing for women at the age of 9. At the age of 17, he went to Paris to begin studying his craft; a year later in 1982, he came back to Beirut and opened his own workshop with 10 employees. This means that, for the most part, Saab learned the craft on his own.

Saab’s reputation grew quickly in Lebanon and Europe as he became the the first non-Italian granted membership in the Italian Camera Nazionale della Moda. In 1997, Elie showed his first collection outside of Beirut, in Rome. In 2003, he showed his first haute couture collection in Paris and was invited to become a member of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. In 2006, Saab was nominated as “Membre Correspondant” at the Chambre Syndicale de la Federation Francaise and he displayed his first ready-to-wear collection in Paris. He's best known as the designer for the dress Halle Berry wore when she won her Academy Award in 2002.

When it comes to wedding gowns, he exhibits a sense of romance and softness by his use of hand embroidery. He does take chances, such as having some styles that are very short and others that are quite form fitting, but he balances them out well by using elegant fabrics and some spectacular beading. He also likes to use a lot of fabrics such as mousseline and silk. Saab's wedding gowns are always flattering on the women that wear them.

Elie Saab 2009 Haute Couture Collection

If you enjoy lavish embroidery on your wedding dress, or haven't ever really thought all that much about it, then the Haute Couture 2009 show for wedding designer Elie Saab is one you need to take a look at. There were some fabulously stunning designs exhibited, and, truthfully, this is a name that more people should, and probably soon will, know better. He exhibited more than 40 dresses, all of them some shade of white, all of them heavily embroidered, and each was different from the rest. The collection consisted of traditional styles, strapless gowns, and one-shouldered designs.

Elie Saab will remain among the world’s top wedding designers for years to come.
